Court Recognizes Value of Mediation Upon 30th Anniversary of Program

October 29, 2026

Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division, recognizes Mediation Week October 26-30 to highlight the benefits of mediation as a free service for resolving civil disputes and commend the court’s accomplished mediators upon the 30th anniversary of the program.

Mediation gives parties an opportunity to work with a neutral, trained mediator to negotiate a mutually agreeable resolution to a civil case. By offering an alternative to a trial, mediation can help parties resolve cases more efficiently, reduce costs, and give both parties greater input in the outcome. The General Division provides mediation services for civil cases at no additional cost.

Among the first in the state of Ohio, the court’s Mediation Program was piloted in 1996 as part of a broader Ohio Supreme Court initiative. Its success helped demonstrate the effectiveness of mediation programs and led to the expansion of mediation in courts statewide, according to the Supreme Court of Ohio. In Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division, more than 500 civil cases were referred to mediation last year, and 64% reached a settlement through mediation.

The court also recognizes its mediators with a Mediator Appreciation Luncheon, thanking them for their contributions to the justice process and their work in helping parties find common ground.
