Information and Referral

There are a number of nonprofit institutions and other organizations that may be able to represent you or provide other legal assistance.

Legal Aid Agencies

Legal aid agencies are non-profit organizations that provide free legal services to people below a certain income level. Before you can get help from a legal aid agency, you usually have to qualify for their help based on your income.

Non-Profits

Non-profit public interest organizations, such as groups concerned with civil liberties or housing discrimination, may be able to help you. These groups sometimes have staff lawyers who may be able to handle your case. Others provide legal help only to groups of people rather than to individuals.

Government Agencies 

If you are charged with a crime and cannot afford a lawyer, the General Division may appoint an attorney or make a referral to the Public Defender on your behalf.

Lawyer-Referral Services 

The local, state and national bar provide lawyer referral services to help you identify an attorney that is right for you.  Other programs like “Find a Lawyer” also provide the ability to search for attorneys.

Law Schools

Law Schools, often provide Pro Bono Services for eligible people. In the Miami Valley, the University of Dayton School of Law School provides a Criminal Law Clinic for indigent clients for misdemeanors in Dayton Municipal Court. Mediation Programs

The Montgomery County Common Pleas Court – General Division provides a Mediation Program to settle cases out of court. The Court recommends you learn more about mediation to see if it is a possibility for you.

Prepaid Legal Service Plans 

Prepaid legal plans allow a person to pay a monthly stipend for general legal services. The American Bar Association can provide more information on prepaid legal plans.
